Harry's Father is home from the war. He brought Major with him. Major is a Red Cross dog. Do you know what that means? After a fight there are many wounded men. Some are lying where they can easily be found by the Red Cross people. Some are not. Perhaps they are hidden under earth or bushes. They cannot move. Many times they cannot even shout. Major's work was to find these wounded soldiers. When he found one he would take the soldier's hat in his mouth and carry it to a Red Cross man. If he could not get the soldier's hat he would chew a button off his clothes or pull a handkerchief from his pocket. Any of these things would show that he had found someone who needed help. Then the Red Cross men would follow Major to the wounded soldier. The soldier would be cared for and perhaps grow well and strong again. In this way Major saved the lives of many men.

Harry's father thought a great deal of Major because Major had been as brave as any soldier. He knew Harry would be perfectly safe if Major looked after him. He thought Major would love Harry and be happy to live with him.

Many of the Keystone View Cards were in boxed sets. They were used in schools for education, hence the often simple writing on the back.
